Tokamak heating by relativistic electron beams
نویسنده
چکیده
The use of relativistic electron beams for supplementary heating of tokamaks to ignition temperatures is discussed, under the assumption that they can be successfully injected. It is shown that if an electron beam with presentstate-of-the-art power, but longer pulse length, can be injected into an Ohmically pre-heated tokamak plasma, it transfers its energy to the plasma on a time-scale short enough for synchrotron radiation to be an unimportant beam energy loss mechanism, while the turbulence generated does not affect the energy confinement. Beam energy and pulse characteristics required for an extension of the ideas to a reactor-size tokamak are presented.

In recent years, many different plans have been considered to use the nuclear energy gained from inertial confinement fusion (ICF) as attempts to obtain high energy efficiencies. In conventional ICF methods, a small amount (about mg) of the deuterium–tritium compound is confined in a small spherical chamber of a few millimeters in radius and compressed by laser or heavy ion beams with powers in...

متن کاملHeating by an electron Bernstein wave in a spherical tokamak plasma via mode conversion.
The first successful high power heating of a high dielectric constant spherical tokamak plasma by an electron Bernstein wave (EBW) is reported. An EBW was excited by mode conversion (MC) of an mode cyclotron wave injected from the low magnetic field side of the TST-2 spherical tokamak. Evidence of electron heating was observed as increases in the stored energy and soft x-ray emission. The incre...

Electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH), as a highly efficient and controllable heating tool, has been widely used in tokamak magnetic confinement devices [1]. Usually, the EC power can be injected as narrow Gaussian beams, which gives rise to highly localized power deposition. Consequently, ECRH and electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) have been expolied to an ideal candidate for local ...
